 | People with Lyme: Parker Posey not first career interrupted by Lyme disease |
LymeBlog News
Lexington, KY USA
By Mac McDonald
Parker Posey withdraws from show due to Lyme disease
Actress Parker Posey announced yesterday that she is withdrawing
from the off-Broadway play "This" because she has been diagnosed with
Lyme disease.
Posey, 40, is best known for her work in the films "Party Girl,"
"Clockwatchers," "Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show" and "For Your
Consideration."
E! News said her recent diagnosis with the tick-borne disease has
sidelined her from taking the stage this fall in Melissa James Gibson's
drama.
Lyme disease is often treatable if it is discovered early but, if
discovered late, it can result in a chronic condition affecting the
heart, neurological system, and result in pain, extreme fatigue and
mental confusion. It is unclear whether Posey is suffering from the
chronic stage of the disease or if she is being treated for an acute,
recently acquired, infection.

Parker Posey. Producers announced Thursday Posey has dropped out of the upcoming off-Broadway play, "This," after being diagnosed with Lyme disease
The treatment for Lyme disease can vary from less than a month of oral
antibiotics to years of intravenous antibiotic treatment. Many
patients never fully recover.
At this time there was no mention of how Posey is being treated for the disease
but the withdrawal from the show indicates treatment lasting longer
than a month. The move to withdraw just 2 months before the scheduled opening date is rather drastic for a veteran actress like Posey.
The production's artistic director told E! the show will go on but it
will not be ready for the announced Nov. 6 start date now that a
replacement must be found.
Parker Posey is not alone in being forced to change scheduled plans in order to concentrate on treating Lyme disease.
Australian tennis champion Samantha Stosur had to withdraw from doubles competition in the WTA Championships in Madrid, November, 2007 and from the Olympics singles competition in August, 2008 all due to Lyme disease.
Daryl Hall of "Hall and Oats" had to cancel in the middle of their 2006 tour when Hall was diagnosed with Lyme.
In 2005 Wyatt Sexton, quarterback for University of Florida was picked to be the number one draft choice for the NFL when he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and later announced that he would never play football again in order to concentrate on treating his disease.
In the past authors Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club), Meg Cabot (The Princes Diaries) and Rebeca Wells (Ya Ya Sisterhood) have been forced to cancel book tours and new releases due to Lyme disease.

Parker Posey is one of my favorite actresses and "Party Girl" is wonderful! It's so sad to see so many people suffer from a disease that is relentless and devastating for no good reason! |

In fact they are just the few we hear about. Thousands of others have also lost their careers, jobs, employment, livelihoods to this evil stuff; it just doesn't make headlines. |
