The Lyme Awareness Art Project: an artist's vision begins

Linda Marcille working in her studio on her third Lyme patient portrait "Psalms of David". She is painting fellow Lyme patients for the Lyme Awareness Art Project (LAAP), a future traveling art show.
For Vermont artist Linda Marcille, the physical suffering was becoming more difficult to endure, and the changes in her vision terrified her. Her life had always revolved around painting and the visual expression of emotions, so it was almost impossible to imagine life without the gift of sight.  She had spent years perfecting one of the more challenging—yet very rewarding—art processes: painting on silk.  Now that challenge was surpassed by the need to overcome the ravages of an unrelenting disease.

Linda, originally from Connecticut, was mostly self-taught in photography, painting and poetry, but also received formal training at the New York Institute of Photography. After years of study and creating and finding her own unique expressive niche, she began showing her silk paintings professionally as a resident artist in a number of galleries in the late 1990’s.  Her hard work paid off even more: Linda’s paintings on silk have sold internationally and have been featured on news shows and in various publications such as Vermont Magazine.

Five years had gone by, and Linda’s health had deteriorated relentlessly to the point of disability.  The doctors she consulted were unable to pinpoint exactly what was happening to her body, but finally, in the summer of 2007, she obtained a firm diagnosis. She learned that a tick-borne illness, Lyme disease, was responsible for her debilitating symptoms.  That long-delayed diagnosis meant that the Lyme infection was deeply entrenched in her system, and recovery would take some time once treatment began.

Thinking back, Linda wondered where and when she might have acquired the illness.  After discussing this with her physician, she found out.  “I have had Lyme for at least 5 years, possibly longer…I did have a tick bite and rash 5 years ago after doing an outdoor art show in Connecticut,” she noted. Had that early illness been treated with a short course of antibiotics right away, she probably would have been cured.  Now it was a much different story.

Unsure of how long it would take to reverse her physical decline, or if she would ever recover fully, she faced the future with guarded hope. She started her therapy which began a road back to health, but it was not smooth or rapid. The medicines were strong and caused their own problems, too.

“I was slowly introduced to a number of medications to get my body settled enough to start the Lyme protocol my doctor wanted to put me on. Then ever so slowly we have been working our way up in dosage amounts,” Linda said.

Blinding headaches, and problems with her heart, speech, cognition, and vision were accompanied by unremitting pain and continued despite therapy. Although she made some progress, the thought of losing the precious sense of sight wasn’t something she could think about without a growing sense of anxiety.  The illness had taken a seemingly irreversible toll on her life by then.

Linda’s ordeal was even more difficult to bear with the isolation brought about when friends slipped away.  Few even called to see how she was ...

doing anymore.  While her life’s work as an artist was retreating along with her friends, her energies, and her finances, the beloved home and studio that were the center of her life had to be put up for sale, and her husband’s health was worsening after a disabling back injury.

While Linda was soaking in the tub one particularly difficult day late last year, she thought how easy it would be to just slip under the water, take a deep breath, and fill her lungs with water.  It really seemed to be a reasonable way to end all the pain and the terrible losses that Lyme disease had brought to her.  But as quickly as those thoughts began, they ended, and with a calmness that overrode her anguish, she turned to prayer for an answer—for direction.

The next day she knew what to do.

Linda decided, “I was thinking a lot about suicide, but my Dad committed suicide when I was 9, and I could never leave my husband who is the love of my life like that. That was the turning point for me and that is when I did my first painting ‘Transfusing Lyme’.”

With that first painting, the Lyme Awareness Art Project (LAAP) began.

Initially, all of the paintings were going to be about the artist’s Lyme disease story, but she quickly decided to go beyond her personal experience. “My saving grace was the moment that I realized that my “Lyme Story” was the same as everyone else’s and that they also shared my suffering, fear, desperation and isolation,” she said.

Linda explained, “I needed to find some way to transcend my own suffering and to give myself a sense of purpose. Through LAAP I hope to paint some of the faces and stories behind Lyme to raise awareness that more research is desperately needed.”

Linda’s plan is to complete at least a dozen portraits and then begin a traveling art show that will highlight the personal toll and emotions of chronic Lyme disease patients.  “This show is about representing the suffering of Lyme…I love happy endings but unfortunately in order for this show to have an impact I need to show the world the pain caused by this devastating disease, “ Linda said.

Her Lyme portraits are being painted in water soluble oil because that medium is less taxing physically for her than working with silk. Each painting will have a paragraph that describes what is represented in the artwork.  At this point in time, she has completed four portraits, and is currently working on a fifth. One is that of a child called “Dinosaur Boy”. The boy envisioned himself as having the strength of one of these fierce primordial creatures, and he enlists that inner toughness to fight the illness that wants to bring him down. He simply will not allow it.

Linda is looking for additional Lyme patients who would like to participate in her project. Go to the Lyme Awareness Art Project website for submission details if you would like to be part of this worthwhile educational undertaking. Linda also has a blog on her site where you can follow her progress in her project and in her journey towards wellness. She encourages you to contact her with your questions or comments.

Linda encourages Lyme patients, “Get creative with this.  Show the world that advanced Lyme is a growing problem, that it hurts both the sufferers and their loved ones and that more research must be done before any more people suffer or even die from this horrible disease!”

I am thrilled to see this article on Linda! She has been through so much and is still going through a lot, but shes a fighter and an inspiration. Linda has contributed in so many ways to getting public awareness about lyme disease out and educating lyme patients at various online lyme supports groups. She is one of the first people who caught my interest years ago an a online support group with her very informative lyme information. I learned so much from the hundreds of links she provides. Her art is nothing short of amazing! What a gift she is to us lyme patients! Great article Rita!

Yes, Linda is a true inspiration, and I was honored to have been given the chance to write about her and help spread the word about her very important project.

Writing about people like Linda really makes me feel uplifted because there is so much harsh reality in LymeLand. She brings encouragement for all Lyme sufferers everywhere. She shines through the pain, cold, isolation.
