HHV-6 Virus and Lyme Posted on: 05-10-2007 @ 09:25 pm |
|
Someone recenlty asked about the HHV-6 virus. A lot of lyme patients are being tested positive for it and all lyme patients should be tested. HHV-6 is a virus in the herpes family. It is NOT the type of herpes associated with sores on mouth or sexually transmitted herpes. A lot of patients freak out when their llmds tell them they have a herpes type virus. I felt alarmed until she quickly explained to me the facts and I soon got my color back! Almost every single person on the planet has the hhv-6 virus. It usually remains latent and is not a threat. However with many chronic conditions & illnesses like lyme that tax the immune system, it can rear its ugly head and make one feel very sick and extremely tired. It is in the same family as Mono and Epstein barr (EBV). In children it causes roseola and chicken pox. The main symptom of hhv-6 for lyme patients is extreme fatigue that can last months or even years. I have tested positive for 3 years. The last time I was tested, it was a high positive and I am currently taking an anti viral called valcyte. HHV-6 is another co-infection of lyme disease. It can go dormant for a while and return. Comment By: JennyScott (Posted on 05-10-2007 @ 09:42 pm) Comment: Now I'm confused because my LD said that both HHV6 and EBV are active in me, but she didn't name them as co-infections. She said that they add to the fatigue and all but and has given me an antiviral and some "TransFactors" that are supposed to help support my immune system with regard to them. I guess if something is active at the same time as the lyme ....anything could be a co-infection. I just automatically think of babesia, bartonella, erlichiosis....but it makes sense now why it would also be classified as a co-infection. |

Comment By: Lymielizzie (Posted on 05-10-2007 @ 10:13 pm) Comment: You are right in that it is a co-infection because it is connected with lyme, not because it came from the tick Transfer Facter is a popular treatment, just so expensive!

Comment By: gogirl (Posted on 05-11-2007 @ 11:50 am) Comment: O.K. so that is why I got the chicken pox in January at the age of 45! I thought it had to do with all of this. I have been exposed over and over again but with everything that was going on in my body at this time I didn't have a chance....I had a great deal of cold soars last year, and Epstein Barr. In a way I was greatful for the pox......it laid me out and forced me to get some answers so I found out I had Lyme. |

Comment By: Lymielizzie (Posted on 05-11-2007 @ 07:51 pm) Comment: EBV occures in conjunction with HHV-6. Also when ever ones immune system is defficient in chronic illnesses like lyme, other dormant herpe viruses can re-activate like the herpes simplex virus 2 which causes the cold sores. It appears from what you have explained, that you had a couple of latent herpe viruses re-activate. HHV-6 is an immune supressive virus. Our poor immune systems are already weak enough, to have that added on top is a physical nightmare. That explaines why so many lyme patients are chronically tired.

Comment By: tracy (Posted on 06-26-2007 @ 09:38 pm) Comment: Hi! My Lyme doc said that it wouldn't make a difference to test me for HHV-6. I have inactive (IgG EBV) along with my IgG Bartonella and Mycoplasma.
She said to her knowledge there would be no difference in tx. I am on Colostrum, CoQ10, and a lot of other enzymes and herbs (including Cat's Claw).
So HHV6, do you know of any specific tx? Transfer Factor, I will look up what is in that. It might be like what I was on before, Ag Immune.
Ok thanks guys, Tracy |

Comment By: Lymielizzie (Posted on 06-27-2007 @ 08:04 pm) Comment: Hi Tracy
I have had HHV6 for almost three years and the last test showed a very hagh titer. Normally it may not make much of a difference and could be treated with the supplement Transfer Factor, but the titer was so high my llmd feels it is interfering with healing the lyme. We need to "unload my immune system" That is why I am being treated for the virus, I have it bad. It must be bad because the herx from the treatment was extremely intense. My LLMD has me on 2 week increments so I don't get too sick from the herxes.

Surprisingly the co-infections are starting to make the news. |

Comment By: lymielizzie (Posted on 07-23-2011 @ 01:04 am) Comment: So much still to learn about lyme. Its all unraveling and can be very overwhelming.
I saw my Dr this week and the Q-fever is back and the titer is higher than the last time I was first diagnosed.
I had fevers in June and my thinking was babesia and it could be babesia because I was positive for that too!
Many of the co-infection symptoms are alike.
Every single infection and co-infection I mentioned I have had or do have.
I would say that the Q-fever has really surprised me the most and from what I read its another nasty bug and can go chronic.
Its also contagious from person to person when active.
I highly recommend every chronic lymie be tested for Q-fever.
I read a lot of post from lyme patients who have it.
