My Battle - My Future . . .
by: emmers
Posted on: 05-31-2012 @ 09:17 am

After being diagnosed 12/2008 with Lyme you'd think getting the right treatment would be simple, right? Wrong. My symptoms presented with joint pain, extreme fatigue, mental fogginess, and heart palpitations. My FP did a great job at putting the puzzle pieces together and tested me for Lyme. Bingo, positive result. The doctor totally played it down, "Oh it's no big deal, take meds for a few weeks and you'll be fine". But I'm not fine... I went to see an infectious disease (ID) doctor, and specifically asked his thoughts on long term antibiotic treatment as well as requested that he test me for coinfections. He stated it would be ridiculous to test me for coinfections we aren't near the Rocky Mountains and came up with various excuses for the other coinfections as well. He agreed with my treatment plan 4 weeks of doxycycline and voila I'm cured. 2D-Echo evaluated by cardiology stated my heart was fine. My head MRI was normal says the neurologist, saw a rheumatologist for the joint pain who said I was ridiculous for coming I don't have RA or any similar disease and stated they didn't need to see me again. Things got better and for a while, I truly felt like my old self. I wasn't confused or foggy, heart palpitations stopped. Progressively over the next two years I developed numbness in my finger tips. Saw neurology who worked me up MRI clear (no lesions) and diagnosed me with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy, stated there's nothing that we can do. Problem is, people in their twenties without comorbidities like DM don't get idiopathic peripheral neuropathy it typically presents in the 5-6th decade in life. One year repeat shows progressive worsening of neuropathy with muscle involvement and demyelination. Now are working me up for genetic autoimmune disorders. Test results which take months to get back, in the mean time I continue to deteriorate. Symptoms - mental fogginess, major fatigue, joint pain rotating between small joints, knees, hips, tremors in bilateral hands, neuropathy in all four extremities, neuralgia in left great toe which has become painful to walk, feeling of my muscles being 'heavy'. I have good days and bad days. I worry what will happen when the muscle gives out? Will my fiance stay and take care of me? Why would someone want to? It seems easier to make a promise in sickness and health when someone is sick, but if I could be bed ridden in a few years, those words carry a much greater meaning. Docs I've seen- Family practitioner, ID, rheumatology multiple, neurology x 2, orthopedic x 1, holistic chriopractor, holistic MD - about ten docs so far. None of the doctors acknowledge chronic Lyme. It exists, and I'm sick because of it, and getting worse. Today I go to see another holistic doctor who specializes in Lyme treatment. I watched the movie 'Under our skin' Lyme documentary. It was amazing, I cried knowing that people are feeling the same way I do. We're not crazy, and we should not be ignored. I'm hopeful because today I have faith that I might actually get treatment.
