Reflection on my past 9 years. Posted on: 03-13-2012 @ 07:01 pm |

Hi im chris. im a 20 year old college student.I contracted a chronic form of Lyme Disease when i was 11 years old. i have very few memories of my childhood left. bits and pieces. little flashes hear and there. my struggle with lyme disease continues to this day. when i was 11 years old i attended a outdoor education school. i have been involved with this school for nearly 10 years. i contracted lyme disease in the couple of semesters at the school during a camping trip. sadly i do not even remember much of my battle with lyme disease in my early years. my lyme disease has caused damage to my memory. i do remember going from being a healthy 11 year old boy having the time of his life running around with friends and learning how to survive in the woods. to being a very sick 11 year old boy who had difficulty getting out of bed. i dealt with what cards i was given. one of my lowest points was when i was so weak that i was unable to walk much more then a few steps. during that time i started getting crushed with depression. i was feeling like i was letting my parents down. i was not able to help them, i needed the help. i was so weak, i was no longer strong. i was scared that i would be left like this permanently. i was scared that i wouldn't be able to run around again. i was very sick for what felt like a very long time. i began to let the lyme disease crush me. i let it not only physically weaken me but also mentally weaken me. i let it pull me into deep depression that i am still working on defeating. i have had lyme disease exposures twice. i contracted lyme again and had to undergo a second treatment. in the time since i have had lyme i have been battling up hill. i have continual difficulty with my joints. yet i am stronger then ever. mostly because fear drove me to become stronger then ever. i have continued problems with my memory. it has impacted my studies at school. i also suffer from pain of various levels every day. possibly i will suffer this for the rest of my life. In my College life lyme has also impacted my studies at school. i am however relieved that colleges are now accepting lyme disease as a medical disorder and giving accommodations. some of the accommodations are such as extra time on papers if you have difficulty typing or writing. much like i do. currently i am going to begin undergoing further tests for the possibility of having yet contracted lyme for a third time. and possibly needing to do another round of treatment for what might be my third time having it. for those of you who do have the ability to pay to have this done. as a side treatment and preventative caution my family uses Mainly Ticks to treat our yard for ticks and fleas as well as bees. http://www.mainelyticks.com/ .for those of you who have families and pets i would highly suggest this. |

Comment By: gogirl (Posted on 03-23-2012 @ 12:34 am) Comment: Hi Chris,I have Lyme, and so does my 14 year old son. The remark that 'fear' drove you really got my attention. That was the case for me also. The treatments can be hard on people and I see why younger adults would not want to spend all the time and money working toward their health.....but I'm glad you have! Fear finally challenged me, too. We will continue getting better and then we can look forward to the day the doctor want us on a maintenance plan! Whoot! |

Comment By: lymielizzie (Posted on 03-15-2012 @ 01:35 am) Comment: Hi Chris. It always makes me sad when a young person who by all means should be in the prime of their life, enjoying it to the fullist but instead suffering the profound effects of lyme disease....and maybe even reinfected for a third time. I hope your youth helps you in your recovery but you have got to stop getting infected! I too have been reinfected 3-4 times so you need to know to be tested for babesia and bartenella too. Do you have a good lyme literate Dr?I know the depression is overwhelming. I hope you think about going to see a good counselor-psychologist and talk about what you are going through and what you have been through, having this disease for so many years can be traumatic. For me finding a professional counselor has been one of the best decisions I made for my recovery. I hope your parents fully understand what lyme does to a person as a whole- mind, body and spirit. Have they or have you seen Under Our Skin? Its a documentary about lyme where you and your parents get a crash 101 course on lyme and the whole ugly controversy. You can watch it free on hulu.comThank you for posting Chris, hang in there. Lizzie |

babesia and bartenella, he is a member of ILADS and has been practicing for over 10 years. i have been tested for all of them. :) over the years i have studied allot of what lyme is and how it effects my body. as well as talking with my doctor allot about it. i have yet to see that movie but i will watch it. thank you for your suggestion. |

Comment By: lymielizzie (Posted on 03-20-2012 @ 09:26 pm) Comment: You sure are lucky to have such a great LLMD to treat you. It takes most patients several years before they finally find an actual LLMD who knows what the heck they are doing.I would be interested in knowing your thoughts on Under Our Skin. Thanks, Lizzie |
