Cruise Blues Posted on: 08-20-2011 @ 06:28 pm |

Grandparents spoil their grandchildren more than they ever spoiled their own children. I suppose they've earned the right to do so. That is why I wasn't surprised when my mother informed me that she was taking my 15 year old daughter on a two week cruise through Europe and Russia; to top it off, she took her to London for a few days before the cruise started too. They are on the cruise right now, having the time of their lives.I decided to take the same two weeks off so I can spend some time with my 8 year old daughter. My daughters are both world travelers, and we were supposed to go to Finland for a wedding in which my daughter would have been the flower girl. There was NO WAY I could go to Finland in my state, and my daughter was very disappointed to miss this opportunity. She just kept asking what we would be doing during these two weeks, and I had no answer for her since I didn't know ahead of time how I'd be feeling. Finally, during the first week of my vacation at home I worked up the courage to go on a trip. I looked into the easiest possible trips I could go on, and came up with a 4-day Mexican cruise. It would not involve any driving or flying, and all meals and entertainment is provided, so I would not have to worry about anything (so I thought), and I booked it.First came the planning for getting permission to take my IV meds on board; I had to get a letter from my doctor, and planned to take the meds in an ice-box to keep them cold. Then came the packing stage; by the time I was done packing, I needed three days of rest to recover from the effort. Getting on the cruise ship with all of my meds in an icebox, and another full bag of syringes, supplements, and oral meds, while waiting in those long lines was not easy. When we finally made it on the ship, I was in excruciating pain.I had forgotten how large these ships are, and every time we needed to do something, we would have to walk for what felt like miles to get to our destination, and since I can't do stairs, we had endless minutes waiting for the elevators. The hardest part, however, was keeping to my diet. On strict orders from my doctor, I'm supposed to be on a gluten free, soy free, dairy free, sugar free, iodized salt free, caffeine free diet, and am forbidden to eat things that grow in the ground like potatoes, carrots, and beets (onions, garlic, and ginger are OK). All food I eat must be organic, but I have never been able to adhere to that rule anyway. On the first day I was good. I found the salad bar, and made myself a nice salad with oil and vinegar dressing. There were also hard broiled eggs available that I could eat. By the middle of day 2, I was sick and tired of lettuce, cucumbers, and eggs, and could not bear to eat any more of that, so I gradually started loosening up on my diet restrictions. I didn't really ask, but am pretty certain that the cake(s) and chocolate(s) that I ate were not sugar free, that they didn't use only sea salt in the preparation of all their foods, and that the croissant was not gluten free. The biggest surprise for me though was that on a Mexican cruise, all of their tortilla chips were made with pita bread! Corn is one of the few things I am allowed to eat, but you could not find any of it on this ship.Yes, I cheated, but I'm not entirely to blame; good luck trying to find quinoa, millet, amaranth, and hemp milk on a cruise ship. It turned out that we didn't have a refrigerator in our room, so I had to leave my IV meds at guest services, and then every day when it was time, I would walk the two miles between my room and guest services, stand in line, pick up my medicine, and walk the thirteen miles back to my room to start the IV (did I mention that sometimes I exaggerate a tinsy bit?).Aside from all of the above, somehow my daughter and I managed to have a blast. We didn't do much; but hung out at the pool, and then went on an "excursion" where we went to a resort and hung out by their pool for a change. My daughter also loves their kids club, so she really enjoyed their activities, and I rested (from having to walk the 36 miles to get her to the kids club and back) while she was there. I did manage to get myself a major sunburn around the area of my catheter, despite the SPF 50 that I kept spraying on my daughter and myself. I guess I missed a few spots!Packing for the return home was also torture, but this time I wisened up and asked for wheelchair assistance so I would not have to stand in those lines with the pain in my legs and back. It was humiliating for me to ask for a wheelchair, but I guess my legs are more important to me than my pride right now.I'm back home now and am back to eating corn tortillas and beans; go figure! I think it's going to take a week or so to detox again off of all that sugar and gluten, and other forbidden foods that I inhaled with delight. I'm glad we went on this trip. It wasn't easy, and I've been sleeping since I got back, but it was worth it. I am looking forward to the days when I can actually do all the activities, but for now, relaxing on a cruise ship was just what I needed. |
