Lemonade - Part 2 Posted on: 07-02-2011 @ 08:54 pm |
|
|
Having Lyme disease has slowed me down and given me the opportunity to look back at my life. I've had my fair share of challenges, and my attitude had always been to face them head-on, fight, fight, and fight until I make it or die. I stuck to my motto:
When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.
I was proud of the way I always faced life with determination and a thick skin. Having been handed a lyme this time, has shaken me to the core. This is not something I can just plough my way through. I am pushing my poor body beyond the very limits of its abilities by the mere act of going to work every day! This time, no matter how hard I tried, I could not make things right; so instead, I became depressed and suicidal.
One day about two or three weeks ago, I was indulging myself in one of my increasingly frequent pity parties. All the party participants, namely me, myself, and I were lamenting the loss of all the function we used to enjoy. For Heaven's sake, it took me 15 years to change careers from an engineer to a doctor, and just as my efforts were begining to take fruition, this happens. There were the repetitive questions, "why me," "why now," "it's not fair," etc. I was admitting defeat; admitting that for the first time in my life, I could not make the lemonade.
Then, I was reminded of a little personal fact. It's something I've known all my life and not a big secret to anyone else either. How I had never made the connection before, I cannot tell. In response to the little reminder, I began to laugh, first a chuckle, then louder and louder until it became a deep-throated and heart-felt laugh.
What is this little personal fact? I LOVE LEMONS AND HATE LEMONADE!!! Ever since I was a child I would sneak into the kitchen, steal the lemons, cut them in half, put salt on them, and suck them dry. Once my mom bought 2 lbs of lemon and they mysteriously disappered in a day, but she figured out the mystery when she saw my cracked and bleeding tongue - yes, sucking on 2 lbs of lemon can do that to your tongue, and Heaven knows what else to your esophagus and stomach! Neither my mother's complaints, nor the dentist's horror at the destruction of my tooth enamel could end this love affair that I had with lemons.
When I came to the United States and was first introduced to lemonade, I was horrified. Who would take something as zesty and perfect as lemons, dilute it by adding water, and completely destroy it by adding sugar? To my further dismay, someimes they would even add some other unwholesome thing to the drink to make it pink! I admit, I tried to fit in and drink lemonade, but always with a feeling of reluctance, guilty at cheating on my love for lemons, and finally realized I would never acquire a taste for this drink and gave it up. My love affair with lemons continues to this very day. I put them on meat, rice, stews, fish, poultry, soup, and find every excuse to cut a lemon in half. My relatives all have ample supplies of lemon ready when I'm going over.
How interesting is it then, that I would choose to make "when life hands you a lemon, make lemonade," my motto to live by? All those years of swimming upstream, fighting against the currents, always pushing ahead, always trying to bend the course of my life to the sheer power of my will!! And I was proud of it too! All I had to do was to realize that what's meant to be, will be. I could just relax, and let the currents take me to where I'm meant to go.
This by no means indicates that I'm giving up my treatment. On the contrary, I have a Hickman Catheter (aka Elrond) sticking out of my chest to prove it. I'm just giving up the fighting of the FACT that I have Lyme. My pity parties are way less frequent now and I don't miss them. Why me? Because. Why now? Because. Not fair. Life isn't always fair, and it's been pretty darn good to me so far.
Now I have a new motto:
When life hands you a lemon, sit back, contemplate the lemon, and marvel at the majesty of this perfect product of Mother Nature's creation.
This is all well and nice if life hands you a lemon, but what about the Lyme, one may ask. I would answer that it took me over 30 years to figure out the lemon riddle, I don't expect I'll find the answer to the Lyme riddle any time soon; but I'm patient.

Comment By: lymielizzie (Posted on 07-02-2011 @ 10:32 pm) Comment: Silly woman, the lymes in the coconut!! So the remedy is, if the lyme is in the coconut, which we in lymeland all know is true, than it only makes sense to make pina coladas so we will feel better! Cheers and bubuy-bye lemonade!
Wouh wouh wouh wouh wouh
Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up,
And said, "Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?"
"Now let me get this straight ",
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you called your doctor, woke him up,
And say, 'Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, dooooctor, to relieve this belly ache?'
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Wouh wouh wouh wouh wouh
