Herxing from Mepron Posted on: 03-19-2008 @ 11:19 am |
|
I am on my third week of taking Mepron with zithro. The first 2 weeks I felt really good and then over the weekend I started to herx. All the symptoms from babesia have come back and so much stronger. I guess that means that the mepron is killing something. I am taking oxycontin because the headache is very painful. I usually feel worst in the morning and hopefully this afternoon will get a little bit better, especially since the medication will kick in by then. I am hoping that I don't experience depression especially since I am on antidepressants already. I am so glad that my Lyme doc found out the missing piece to puzzle. At least one of them. He just got back the second positive result for babesia so that was a good thing. My doc wasn't sure if it was a false positive and started me on the Mepron anyway. I'm glad he did. I've been seeing him over a year and a half and it never showed up until now which concerns me. It's been growing all this time because antibiotics don't kill it. The medicine I take is used for malaryia to kill the parasite. Hopefully it hasn't done any long term damage. Well, it is what it is. Just glad that he found it now and we will deal with it. I've heard that it's one of the easiest co-infections to kill, so that's a positive. One day at a time, right???? |

Comment By: LymeEnigma (Posted on 03-19-2008 @ 03:38 pm) Comment: Carol, I believe you are starting to feel ill because the Mepron is reaching higher concentrations in your body and you are beginning to feel some of the medication's side effects. Babesia (protozoa) are not spirochetes, and therefore they do not function the same way Borrelia do; it is unlikely that you are experiencing a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, which is mainly limited to spirochetal diseases. Please do not get sucked into the endless Mepron cycle because the side-effects are so similar to the disease's symptoms ... and make sure to read the info on Mepron in your other thread. Remember that Mepron is one of the meds given to HIV and AIDS patients for HIV-specific lung infections;
it's a heavy-duty drug and can do horrific things to the GI tract, not
to mention all of the other terrible side effects that it can bring.
I'm sorry you're having such a hard time, now. I know how bad it can be. I've been there. I hope that you start feeling better soon. Take care.

Comment By: JennyScott (Posted on 03-30-2008 @ 09:58 pm) Comment: I'm not shocked that your doc is first finding these things now. It's only been about a year since the new FRY test came out that looks for the coinfections. I found out last May that I have bartonella and babesia. Then 2 months ago when the retook it to see in those two have been eradicated - they found I had Erlichiosos. Guess its just a matter of luch that the one drop of blood they use for the smear will show the co-infection.
Anyway, I've been on Mepron and it definitely causes herxing. I am on IV Vanco, oral zithro, Mepron and oral mycobutin. Sure hope it eradicated the co-infection that have really beaten me up.
I'll keep you in my prays and hope you will be feeling well really soon.
All love, Jenny |
